Servant of God Demetrius Gallitzin
Apostle of the Alleghenies (December 22, 1770 Anno Domini – May 6, 1840 A.D.)
Demetrius Gallitzin was raised in the highest circles of aristocracy. His father, a Russian prince served as ambassador to Holland , while his mother was a German countess She also happened to be a devout Catholic & this faith, imparted to her son, set his life on a surprising course

While making a tour o America , Gallitzin was struck by the needs of the struggling Church . Resolving to become a priest, he enrolled in the new seminary in Baltimore The news was not well received by his father Nevertheless, Demetrius was ordained in A.D. 1795. He traveled widely, performing mission work in a territory that stretched from southern Pennsylvania to Maryland & Virginia .
In 1799 Gallitzin used his own fortune to purchase land for a new Catholic settlement in Loretto , Pennsylvania . For many years he was the sole priest west of the Allegheny Mountains Carving this settlement out of the wilderness was incredibly taxing. Aside from buying tracts of land for settlers Gallitzin set up sawmills tanneries & other industries to support them

Though Gallitzin had expected to inherit his parents' fortune, he found himself disinherited by a decree from the Russian government on account of his ordination as a Catholic priest. Having exhausted himself physically & financially for the sake of his flock, he died on May 6, 1840 A.D. His cause for canonization is in process.
"Whatever differences on points of doctrine may exist amongst the different denominations of Christians , all should be united in bonds of charity, all should pray for one another all should be willing to assist one another...."
