Venerable Mary Potter
Founder, Little Company of Mary (
9 April 1913 Anno Domini A.D.)
Mary Potter grew up in London 
with her mother, a convert to Catholicism , & her 4 brothers. (Her father had abandoned the family soon after Mary's birth.) Mary considered marriage, but was encouraged by her bishop to pursue religious life: "The only spouse for you," he said, "is Jesus Christ."

On her bishop's advice ♗ Mary entered the Sisters of Mercy in Brighton 
It did not prove a good fit, & Mary returned home after 18 months. An experience of prolonged illness-so severe that at times she could not pray 
inspired her to envision a religious community dedicated to praying 
& caring for the dying 
Her spiritual director at the time discouraged this plan. When she wrote a book 
"The Path of Mary" he commanded that she show it to no one.
One of her Mary 's brothers advised her to see the bishop of Nottingham , who turned out to be friendly & sympathetic to her plan. With his support she rented an abandoned factory 
invited some interested friends to join her, & established a new congregation- the Little Company of Mary. At this point, the bishop, who considered himself the highest superior of the community, deposed Mary & installed another sister as superior.

Mary was assigned to beg for alms 
She endured this state of affairs for 2 years, until the community, at a new chapter meeting, unanimously elected her as their superior 
The following years saw the congregation's approval by Rome 
& the spread of communities to America 
Australia 
& throughout England 
After suffering many physical trials, including breast cancer & scarlet fever, Mary died on 9 April, 1913 A.D.
