Saints Who Are Invoked in Times of Illness

Lydwina was the prayerful child of poor parents. At the age of 15, she was ice-skating ⛸️ with friends when she fell through the ice, breaking a rib. The wound refused to heal, & she began to suffer vomiting 🤢 🤮 & weakness & became bedridden.

At first, Lydwina struggled to accept her situation. Only with the help of a local priest ⛪ was she able to begin to unite her sufferings with those of Christ :jesus:. She remained sickly for 38 years, suffering bouts of paralysis ♿, the multiplication of sores on her body, partial blindness & heart attacks 🫀 .

Over time, Lydwina took on additional penances for the salvation of others, including fasting from all food but the Communion host :jesus: 🫓 She was granted the graces of ecstatic prayer & visions 🙏 & many came to ask her advice. Others, like a new priest in town, doubted her gifts; for a time he refused her Communion

At the end of Lydwina 's life, she had a vision of a rosebush 🌹 & heard the words, "When the rosebush is in full bloom, your sufferings will be at an end." She was on her deathbed when she say the bush again, covered with roses.

The story of Lydwina 's life is well attested, with 3 contemporary biographies - one by Thomas a Kempis . It is now believed that Lydwina's mysterious illness may have been multiple sclerosis .
