Anselm struggled to maintain the autonomy of the Church . Anselm spent his final years pursuing reform, both ecclesial & social - he was a successful opponent of the slave trade & a proponent in theological study Called the Father of Scholasticism , he followed the motto "faith seeking understanding."
In Anselm 's "Meditation on the Dignity and Woe of Man's Estate" he pondered the purpose of man's existence His conclusion, drawn from Scripture: man was created for divine praise. "Test thy life, therefore, by the master-feeling of the saints & note well what is said of the saint, 'With his whole heart he praised the Lord.'"
