At the age of 14, Casimir was sent to lead an army against the king of Hungary 🀴 πŸ‡πŸ‡Ί When the enterprise began to look fruitless, Casimir withdrew his army. At the same time, a letter from the pope arrived, asking the Poles and Hungarians to seek peace. Nevertheless, Casimir's father, upset by his son's refusal to go to war, imprisoned him in a castle ⛓️ 🏰 for 3 months.

Afterward, Casimir would no longer take up arms. He took to wearing a hairshirt under his clothes and began to pray at night outside the locked doors of churches ⛪ πŸ™ He refused to be married, preferring to remain solely at Christ 's service :jesus: It is said that Casimir exhibited the classic signs of dwelling perpetually in God's presence: a serene countenance and a will toward peace in all his relationships. He spent so much of his time and income on the needy πŸ’° that his countrymen dubbed him "defender of the poor."
