Saint Aelred of Rievaulx
Abbot ( 1167 Anno Domini A.D.) Feast: 12 January
St. Aelred was born in northern England & spent his life within the penitential atmosphere of a Cistercia monastery Yet it might well be said of him, as he said of one of his monks, that he was "friendship's child," for he spent all his energy "in seeking to be loved & to love" In his early life, Aelred served in the court of the kings of Scotland

Aelred might well have enjoyed a successful career in this service but an errand brought him to Yorkshire to visit the new Cistercian monastery of Rievaulx . There, feeling that he had found his true home, he immediately applied for entry. Aelred's rise within the monastic community was rapid, culminating in his election as the abbot of Rievaulx, an office he retained until his death at the age of 57.

During Aelred 's term the monastery grew to include over 600 monks, making it the largest religious community in England . No doubt this success owed much to Aelred's style of leadership. He called the monastery a school of love๐จ๐ซ He encouraged the cultivation of true friendship among his monks as a reflection of their friendship with & love for Christ

As Aelred wrote in his treatise "Spiritual Friendship" ๐ ✍️ "I call them more beasts than men who say life should be led so that they need not console anyone nor occasion distress or sorrow to anyone...seeking to love no one & be loved by none." He died on 12 January 1167 A.D.
"God is friendship...He who dwells in friendship dwells in God and God in him."
